Nanyuki, Kenya

We know
this mountain.

Mount Kenya Routes is a local operator run by Kenyan guides who were born and raised at the foot of this mountain. We guide Sirimon, Chogoria, Naro Moru, Burguret, Timau, and the classic traverse - and we take every ascent seriously.

Our story

A Kenyan company, built on the mountain.

Mount Kenya Routes was founded in Nanyuki by Kenyan mountain guides who wanted to offer something different - not a package-tour experience, but a genuine mountain expedition led by people who know every ridge, stream crossing, and weather pattern on this peak.

We operate from Nanyuki, ten minutes from the Sirimon Gate and a short drive from Chogoria and Naro Moru. That proximity matters. When a weather window opens, we can move fast. When conditions deteriorate, we know it before most operators do - because we live here.

Every guide on our team holds a current Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) guiding licence. KWS licensing is not automatic - guides are vetted, trained, and must pass assessments covering mountain rescue, first aid, and route knowledge. We consider it the minimum standard, not a selling point. Over the years we have guided climbers from more than thirty countries to the summit of Point Lenana, and led technical expeditions to Nelion and Batian.

Sustainability is not a marketing word for us - it is a practical reality. We operate within the rules of Mount Kenya National Park, carry all waste off the mountain, and pay fair wages to our porters and cooks. The communities around Nanyuki and Chogoria depend on responsible mountain tourism. We take that responsibility seriously.

Why choose us

Four things we never compromise on.

Licensed & certified guides

Every guide holds a valid Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) guiding licence. Technical routes are led by IFMGA/KMG-certified mountain guides. No licence, no guide - it's that simple.

Small group sizes

We cap most treks at 12 people. Smaller groups move faster, acclimatise better, and get more attention from the guide. We're not a conveyor belt - every climb is managed as its own expedition.

Safety-first protocols

All guides carry supplemental oxygen, a pulse oximeter, and a full wilderness first aid kit. We follow strict turnaround rules based on weather, time, and the physical state of each trekker - the summit is never worth a casualty.

Local & community-led

We are based in Nanyuki, born and raised at the foot of this mountain. Our porters and cooks come from the surrounding communities. When you book with us, money stays local.

The team

Our guides.

Our lead guides are KWS-licensed Kenyan mountain professionals with years of experience on Mount Kenya's slopes. They know the mountain in every season: the dry clarity of January, the mist-wrapped moorland of the long rains, and the pre-dawn cold of a summit morning in August.

Technical routes - Nelion and Batian - are led by guides with rock climbing and high-altitude mountaineering qualifications. All senior guides hold current Wilderness First Aid certification and carry emergency oxygen.
