Route itinerary

  1. Day 1 ·

    Chogoria GateLake Ellis Campsite

    11 km+700 m3–4 hrsSleep: 3,600 m

    Enter at Chogoria Gate (2,900 m) and trek through montane forest into moorland. Lake Ellis Campsite (3,600 m) offers the first views of the main peaks.

  2. Day 2 ·

    Lake Ellis CampsiteMintos Camp

    8 km+745 m6–7 hrsSleep: 4,200 m

    Climb into Gorges Valley above Lake Michaelson. Mintos Camp (4,200 m) sits in one of the most dramatic amphitheatres on the mountain.

  3. Day 3 ·

    Mintos CampAustrian Hut

    7 km+500 m4–5 hrsSleep: 4,700 m

    Traverse Hall Tarns and ascend steeply to Austrian Hut (4,700 m). Superb views of Batian and Nelion from the hut. Prepare gear for the summit push.

  4. Day 4 ·

    Austrian HutPoint Lenana → Austrian Hut

    2 km+195 m-195 m2–3 hrsSleep: 4,700 m

    Pre-dawn start (03:00) for the summit. The 0.9 km scramble from Austrian Hut to Point Lenana (4,985 m) is the shortest summit morning on the mountain. Return to Austrian Hut after sunrise photos.

  5. Day 5 ·

    Austrian HutMet Station

    11 km-1740 m6–7 hrsSleep: 3,050 m

    Descend west via the Naro Moru corridor through Mackinder's Valley and across the vertical bog to the Meteorological Station (3,050 m).

  6. Day 6 ·

    Met StationNaro Moru Gate

    9 km-400 m3–4 hrs

    Final descent through bamboo and rainforest to Naro Moru Gate (2,650 m). Transfer to Nanyuki or Nairobi.
